Nitric oxide (NO) is a colorless, pungent, nonflammable, toxic, oxidizing gas. NO is a pollutant created through the combustion of fossil fuels. It is also produced through the direct reaction of nitrogen and oxygen in the atmosphere during thunderstorms. Commercially, all high-purity nitric oxide is produced from the oxidation of ammonia with a platinum catalyst and heat.
